TEN-T Days 2011: Decision makers meet to discuss how infrastructure investment can get the economy moving

Date: 08/12/2011

Decision makers and business leaders met in Antwerp, Belgium on 29th and 30th November as part of the TEN-T Days 2011 to discuss how the European Union's funding of cross-border transport infrastructure projects can help boost the economy. Organised by the European Commission, the TEN-T Days 2011 brought together the Commission, Members of the European Parliament, the European Coordinators for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), Ministers and other high level representatives of the Member States as well as more than 600 stakeholders. Also present was the Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, Commissioner responsible for transport. The theme of this year's TEN-T Days was Connecting Europe: Putting Europe's economy on the move.

Participants discussed and started preparing for the new TEN-T framework and instruments. These were proposed by the Commission in October 2011 in the Ten-T Guidelines and the Connecting Europe Facility regulations.

The conference provided an opportunity to consider how the new planning framework and the increase of robust implementation tools will ensure that the EU achieves the highest added value. It also examined how the new financial instruments can be used more effectively as part of a consistent strategy that pulls together EU and national, public and private funding and financing.

Over the last two years TEN-T policy has been thoroughly reviewed in close consultation with all stakeholders. As a result the Commission proposed new TEN-T guidelines, which sets out the foundations of TEN-T policy development until 2050 and the proposal for the "Connecting Europe Facility" which establishes the funding mechanisms for Trans European Networks until 2020.
