European companies present initiative for CO2 reduction

Date: 15/02/2012

More and more companies are making sustainability an important part of their business. Especially companies that operate internationally find it difficult to measure and improve their performance on sustainability. In Europe there are a lot different sustainability initiatives with a regional or national character.

A consortium of 25 major international companies such as Heineken, Dow Chemical and DHL, have joined forces for a pan-European system that can reduce CO2 emissions from road transport companies. Recently, the consortium presented this system to representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission.

The program is an European version of the similar and successful 'Smartway Partnership' program in the United States. The European Shippers' Council (ESC) and the EVO have been appointed by this group of companies to manage the program. The Energy Saving Trust will develop the technology

The program assists businesses in reducing CO2 emissions. Through a central database, the emissions are calculated and monitored. Companies can also compare the environmental performance of transport transport with each other. This enables logistics managers to measure the carbon footprint of their products. Transport companies also benefit from the system, because it attracts climate-conscious consumers.
