Study to support the development of sea-basin cooperation in the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Ionian, and Black Sea

Date: 12/06/2014

The study to support the development of sea-basin cooperation in the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Ionian, and Black Sea is one of six sea-basin studies commissioned by DG MARE. Its main objective was to identify the blue growth needs and potential in the Mediterranean and Black Sea countries by providing a breakdown of the marine and maritime activities that make up the blue economy of each country and elaborating policy recommendations for those activities identified as “most relevant and promising”.

Within the framework of the present study, it was evaluated the state of play and growth potential of twelve countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Romania, Slovenia, as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Turkey bordering the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Some of these countries border several sea-basins (or sub-sea basins), such as Italy, Greece and Turkey. An effort to differentiate between the sea-basins and the sub-sea basins is made. In this sense, the country reports describe the maritime economic activities primarily at a country level, but also breakdown at regional level is available in the respective annexes.
