New EU commissioner for transport

Date: 17/09/2014

The European Commission's president-elect, Jean Claude Juncker, has presented his team of commissioners and unveiled his plans for several structural reforms. He has put forward Slovak candidate Maroš Šefčovič as the commissioner of the newly established directorate general (DG) for transport and space, which was previously named the DG for mobility and transport. Šefčovič, a Slovak diplomat and the current European commissioner for inter-institutional relations and administration, will take over his new role from Siim Kallas.

In line with the new space-related dimension that has been added to the existing DG Move, the new DG will incorporate several space-related units from DG enterprise and industry. The proposed team of commissioners, including Šefčovič, will now have to receive approval from the European Parliament. Candidate hearings will be held in the week of 29 September 2014. (elg)
