TEN-T: EU to back the development of green gas filling stations in Sweden

The EU's TEN-T Programme  will co-finance with over €2 million a pilot deployment of compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations on the northern Sweden's main road network. The project aims to upgrade and extend the existing alternative fuel infrastructure to enable the supply of safer, greener and cheaper CNG.

The project will cover two new CNG filling stations in Härnösand and Umeå, as well as improve existing stations at Sundsvall and Skellefteå in northern Sweden.

The aim of this project is to increase the number and density of the CNG filling stations, encourage the use of CNG and create a market opportunity for CNG/LNG investors.

The project's results will be used to develop best practice for new actors in the CNG market and support decision-making for other possible CNG filling stations. The project will also provide solutions on how to accelerate market development of both CNG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure along the roads in specific regions where the distance between urban centres and gas distribution grids is too long, or where such a grid does not exist.

The project was selected for EU funding with the assistance of external experts under the TEN-T Annual Call 2013, priority ' Decarbonisation (Oil substitution or environmental cost reduction)'. Its implementation will be monitored by INEA, the European Commission's Innovation and Networks Executive Agency.

The project is to be completed by December 2015.
