EU approves long vehicles

Date: 14/04/2015

The European Parliament has approved that trucks of up to 25.25 meters of length and 60 tons of weight can cross borders, if both countries agree. This is a threat to coastal shipping by sea.

‚ÄčThe aim is to ensure secure and more environmentally friendly transport in Europe. The directive was approved in a European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg. The approval of the European Council still remains.

Long trucks like this are already common in the Nordic countries. They can now ship cargo between countries. Long trucks like this can carry 30% more cargo than standard semi-trailers - with limited extra costs.

This new legislation is good for the environment, but bad for coastal shipping, since the unit cost of trucking becomes lower, making it more difficult for short sea shipping to compete.
