5,300 tonnes of sand imported for St George's Bay, Bugibba

Date: 08/07/2015

Malta has imported 5,300 tonnes of sand from Jordan for St George’s Bay and Buġibba.

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis told opposition MP Ċensu Galea in reply to a parliamentary question that the sand had the same characteristics as that imported from the same source in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

St George’s Bay had taken 3,500 tonnes and the remaining 1,800 tonnes went to the perched beach in Buġibba.

In view of a two-day delay in arrival and not to cause any weekend disruptions to beachgoers, work at St George’s was carried out on Monday as planned, with work at Buġibba being done on Thursday and Friday.

Dr Zammit Lewis said the work had gone around the clock and the two jobs had been completed in five days.
