Date: 11/03/2016

The European Shortsea Network (ESN) which is currently chaired by Malta, held its meeting in Brussels on the 3rd of March, wherein it discussed the launching of its project SHIFT 2020.  This project is aimed at facilitating the modal shift of cargo to the sea as laid down in the objectives of the DG MOVE D1.  This meeting was attended by Jason Bongailas, in his capacity as Chairman of the Malta Shortsea Promotion Centre and Godwin Xerri who is currently the chairman of ESN.  This meeting was hosted at Dar Malta where the members of ESN were met and addressed by Mr David Kerr, Maritime Attaché at the Maltese Embassy in Brussels and Ms Emma La Ferla, Senior Policy Officer (Maritime Affairs) at Permanent Representation of Malta to the EU.

Mr Xerri also gave a presentation on the project of ESN during the meeting held on the 4th of March at the European Commission during the Joint Short Sea Shipping and Motorways of the Sea Focal Points and Short Sea Promotion Centres meeting.  SHIFT 2020 aims at identifying cargo flows which can be better served in terms of costs and transit time through shortsea shipping.
