SSI Defines Goals for Sustainable Shipping by 2040

Date: 12/05/2016

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), a coalition of shipping leaders, and industry stakeholders have developed a roadmap to define tangible milestones across all areas of sustainability that must be collectively delivered to create a sustainable shipping industry by 2040.

The roadmap highlights the key defining factors central to implementing core areas in the shipping industry. The central areas to be targeted are: proactive contribution to the responsible governance of the oceans; earning the reputation a trusted and responsible partner in the communities that shipping interacts with and providing healthy, safe and secure work environments. The core areas also encompass instilling real transparency and accountability within the industry; developing financial solutions that reward sustainable performance and changing to a diverse range of energy sources, using resources more efficiently and responsibly and dramatically reducing greenhouse gases.
