Commissioner Bulc at the opening of the Gotthard base tunnel in Switzerland

Date: 15/06/2016

EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc travelled to Lugano, Switzerland, on 31st May and 1st June, to take part in the official opening of the 57-kilometer long Gotthard base tunnel – the longest rail tunnel in the world.

The tunnel will become operational in December this year and will increase the competitiveness of the rail transport on the Rhine-Alpine core network corridor – a key European axis linking the North Sea ports of Benelux countries with north-western Italy. The opening of the tunnel was preceded by the meeting of the ministers of transport of the Alpine countries, in the framework of the so called Zurich Process.

Commissioner Bulc said "The Opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is a historical moment for Switzerland and cross-Alpine traffic in Europe. The tunnel will better serve the needs of people; and provide a more reliable, cost-effective transport link for businesses in this region. This is a unique project in Europe. It has political consensus and the support of the population as expressed in a referendum. It is indeed an example for other regions to be inspired by."
