MSPC workshop seminar on bottlenecks

Date: 23/11/2016

The Malta Shortsea Promotion Centre (MSPC) organised a workshop seminar on the 17th November entitled “Bottlenecks hindering stakeholders in the maritime industry to achieve further developments in our ports”.

The seminar was very well attended by a cross section of the local maritime industry including Transport Malta, Customs Authority, Malta Maritime Forum, Malta Marittima, port service providers, Malta Freeport Terminals, Valletta Gateway Terminal, Valletta Cruise Terminal, representatives of shortsea carriers which call at Malta, port workers, shipping agents and other entities.  The seminar which was in the form of an interactive workshop gave scope to the participants to discuss those elements that are required from their perspective to attract additional shipping services to Malta.  This type of workshop is in line with the direction given by DG Move to the European Shortsea Network, of which the MSPC is a member, and namely that of identifying the bottlenecks that hamper shortsea shipping and at the same time searching for opportunities of shortsea services.

Amongst the local problems that were identified, the most salient were:

  1. The need to attract shipping services that cater not only for the Malta trade, but also for transhipment traffic;
  2. The importance of having facilities within the geographical limitations of Malta’s ports to enable other services to call at Malta;
  3. The proactive approach adopted by the Maltese customs authorities to facilitate new shipping activities, such as cross stuffing operations and customs clearance at Malta for goods entering the European Union.

The full minutes of this meeting are being posted on the website of MSPC and follow up action will be held with the respective authorities to address solutions.
